“The two ways I can spend it to buy business class on the commuter jet, which is probably a little silly but they do allow you more luggage allowance.”
Next best action
Contact manager Michael Stiles within 24 hours to confirm whether Pavlus can book the open-jaw round-trip ticket (New York to Lisbon, return from Lisbon) and apply the $1,280 rebate; then email Ed a yes/no answer and send updated invoice. Once confirmed, Ed will decide between 22nd or 23rd departure date and business vs. premium economy class, and Pavlus can finalize the Amsterdam-to-Southampton leg flight booking.
Full analysis
What happened

Ed called to finalize details on a river cruise (likely Uniworld in Europe) and discuss ancillary airfare options. Lauren had submitted a final payment and arranged a comped pre-night hotel (reducing cost by $622). The main discussion centered on whether Ed can book an open-jaw ticket (New York to Lisbon, returning from Lisbon after the regional cruise in South America later that year) and claim the $1,280 airfare rebate. Ed provided detailed pricing comparisons showing the round-trip is cheaper than one-way premium economy ($3,200 vs $3,300). Lauren committed to confirming this nonstandard arrangement with her manager Michael and will reply yes/no within days. Secondary items: Ed decided on a 7:00 PM departure from Amsterdam (after lunch excursion), will stay a hotel night before cruise in Southampton to manage luggage and early check-in, and learned past-guest promotions are less generous than first-time guest offers. Call ended with Ed awaiting confirmation on the open-jaw ticket and flight booking decisions (date: 22nd or 23rd, class of service).

Emotional read

Ed is methodical, detail-oriented, and cautiously optimistic throughout. He's invested in getting maximum value and clearly communicates his reasoning (comparing $3,300 one-way vs $3,200 round-trip premium economy). His wife's skepticism about business class upgrades shows he's negotiating at home. He's deferential to Lauren and complimentary ('always fun to talk'), but also thorough in asking follow-up questions, suggesting confidence in his own research and priorities.

Emotional arc through the call

Steady and positive throughout; Ed began methodical and detail-focused, remained so, and ended warmer and more confident after Lauren educated him on promotions and committed to follow-up on the open-jaw ticket question.

How customer sees Pavlus
  • positive · praised Lauren by name for being helpful and educational; said 'always fun to talk' to her
  • positive · acknowledged that someone at Pavlus on prior Saturday call was 'very respectful' and said 'whatever Lauren says is true'
  • neutral · asked whether Pavlus has better pricing than direct online booking or just books standard rates; Lauren answered they 'sometimes get lower premium and business fairs' and are 'very competitive'
Process friction
  • had to clarify which 'Michael' was the air department contact (Michael or Michael Stiles) after prior Saturday call
  • transfer inclusion for early ship departure from Amsterdam unclear; had to ask Lauren to verify with supplier
Value perception

Ed sees value in Pavlus's rebate structure and all-inclusive approach, but is comparison-shopping and asked directly: 'Do you guys have better pricing than others or do you basically just book the best me there I can find on the Web?' He was reassured by Lauren's response that Pavlus can match or beat online fares, particularly for premium cabins.

Customer: Okay, thank you.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Oh, okay. Yeah, yup it went through, I just got off the can you hear me?
Customer: Hello.
Customer: Yeah.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Ed, it's Lauren at Ablis.
Customer: Yeah, I have to take it off. I'm taking it off WiFi call me back if I cut you off because I think my WiFi screwed up hanger.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Oh, okay.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Okay.
Customer: Okay, now you're on 5G. Maybe you better go for it, oh, you say.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Perfect. Okay. Yup. I made your full payment to talk with the insurance.
Customer: Great.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): I submitted for the free pre night they took that cost off when we made the final payments and I'm just waiting for them to send me a new invoice showing that it was comped out cause you get that from tables. And then regarding you can leave the when you're in what, Amsterdam they just just need, they just need to know if you're gonna leave because I think there's an Amster I'm both tour till about 12:00 or 1230 that day. If you want to leave before then or after lunch, I would just need to tell them.
Customer: Okay.
Customer: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Customer: No, no, it would, it would be, it would be well after lunch we're looking at a 7:00. I wrote all I wrote you very too much detail probably, but I went to understand my situation.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Okay.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Okay.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Gotcha. Yup. I saw it so I just, I will let them know it's after lunch.
Customer: Right, and if we change our mind and decide we set it up, cause we don't wanna miss the final evening, we can always change our mind that.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yeah. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. The only thing in though is.
Customer: Yeah.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): What do you wanna do about the flight though? That's the thing do you want to get, cause we can book that? It's up to you. I mean do you're doing the cruise after which is fine we can still do you know book that flight from Amsterdam. What into.
Customer: Okay.
Customer: South aton in port.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): South Hampton, we can book that for you. Part of the to you know, for part of to.
Customer: But we need to, you can't change your mind the last second on that, of course, I understand that. Yeah. Okay, now, right now let me ask you the other questions I raised, do I have to spend over 12848 in airfare with you guys in order to get the rebate?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Exactly, exactly because it's gonna be nonrefundable mm-hmm.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): No, that's just the total cost, the $1,280, that's the total rebate amount that we would give them to you. So, let's say that flight from Astra the south Hampton is, I'm making this up like, $500, you pay the $500. We'll send you a check for $500. It's up to the $1,280.
Customer: Okay, well then, then, it would be stupid for me not spend 1280 the two ways I can spend I mean, I'm not being, I'm not wasting money here but I'm just thinking the two ways I can spend it to buy business class on the commuter jet, which is probably a little silly but they do allow you more luggage allowance and there's less chance you're loving to be lost which is important when you're getting ready for a transit Laner. So, the other option I asked you about is that I buy my own air from south Hampton but then I buy, I buy the trip from New York to zert with you guys and I'm sure that would be fine. Now, the third question.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yeah.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Mm-hmm.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Mm-hmm.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yup.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): That's probably gonna be the better value right there if we did the international, the New York to zero portion cause you'll eat up that $1,280 for sure.
Customer: Okay, this.
Customer: Oh, yeah. We a big-time unless we take, you know, no lay room coach and I don't think we're doing that even then we do it we need it up. But the next question I had is would they would, would have Lissy willing to do what I mentioned in that detailed paragraph where I just sell me a ticket, I open Jo ticket it goes Tozer returning from Lisbon six months later. It, the values incredible. If I, for example, if I buy a non stock premium economy from New York, it's $3,300. Okay.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Mm-hmm.
Customer: If I buy a open job New York sic with a return from Liz then when I get back from the region cruise in March it's $3,200. It's actually $100 cheaper by pre to buy to by the open drop any time if tables doesn't mind selling it I mean it's link to a, able screws this region we're going to South America but I got to hell with the deal on American I already walk that but, but if you know, cause it goes from New York Korea and then to cruise the list to listen and then we fly her Lisbon would, would be willing to tell me that ticket.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Mm-hmm.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): To do a round trip and.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): I don't see why not. I'd have to ask Michael on that.
Customer: Yeah, I talked to Michael over the weekend. Is he the king of the air? Is he the, your main air guy?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Either, did you talk to Michael or Michael style do you remember?
Customer: Whatever Michael was on, on Saturday so it might not have been this point cause it.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): It might have been my boss, it might have been my boss Michael style. I'll just run this by him cause I saw your email. So thank you. It's detailed, I'll just.
Customer: Okay.
Customer: That's me. Mr.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Well, I like, hey, more details better than not a lot. So I don't think it should be a problem because you know, we do have the region booking as well. It doesn't change the 1280 though so you.
Customer: Oh. Well, she shouldn't, not, not that I would expect it to. Of course not. I'm already getting I'm already getting my, my rebates on the region cruise.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Oh, okay. Well you're just you're just asking cause it's a be.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): You, yeah, if we can do that. I don't see why it would be a problem.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): I can double-check with him but if he said yes, then.
Customer: Yeah, if not, if not what I'll do is I'll buy my own ticket and I will just, I'll do business class which will take it over 1280 to from probably from Amstrad south Hampson not just to get you get the money out of your pocket but, but also because I was thinking, yeah, I, I'll to, yeah.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Well, no, we want to give you the best value. Ed, that's the thing like I like us. I mean, we want to give you as much back as we can. I mean, even if we do this, then yes, then you'll get, then basically, let's say it's $3,300 or whatever it is or $3,200 a person or whatever it is, you pay for it and then we'll send you a check for $1,280. So, it kinda, it would work in your favor. Do you want to hold and?
Customer: Yeah, that's what it is.
Customer: Right, and I, and, and business class from a Paris answer down to south on it's about 700 a person. So we would be over the 128 even if we just bought that piece. Assuming we go business class. I'm still thinking about it cause my wife said it's ridiculous.
Customer: And I, I'm nervous about European airlines and love rules and, and they compensate your carrying. I, I'm scared of, of my US.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): I know. Well, even if like, we booked the Amsterdam to south Hampton and it was business class, it's $1,400 total. Then basically, your and then the re, the rebate of $1,280, you're gonna pay $120 for business class for that segment.
Customer: Yeah.
Customer: Even even more the business class is automatically returning to the only one that so I can actually change my see that's not get that.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): You would have to decide if you wanted to leave on the twenty third or the twenty second for that one.
Customer: Yeah, absolutely. Al, so, yup, I really have to decide myself too so my, my wife.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): But in the meantime, but you know what? In the meantime though I will ask Michael, my manager Michael style, since from your email that we would be able, it would be allowable. I don't see a problem with this cause we do people's world cruises all the time doing, you know, nine months later, the return.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): And then it, it's kind of what you guys would prefer. Do you want us to do the little huddle jumper through Europe or do it this way?
Customer: Yeah.
Customer: Yeah, and then that's what I need to know and also was I gonna say.
Customer: Yeah, and the best example is the premium economy is $3,300. The Premo is $3,300 one way and it 3200 round trip. Just for example, we might have decide to do business class, which would be more. But I just wanted to give you a clear example of why we, why did make sense to Botha.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yeah, of course, it makes sense. I totally agree, makes sense to do a round trip then do a one way. It, it's always as cheaper.
Customer: They totally, they totally route you on the, on the, on the.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): They do, absolutely, absolutely. I, yes, let me see something here.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Oh, I think just updated your invoice here. Let's see.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yup, they did. Perfect. I'm going to get a new invoice there so I'll check with Michael on that and then you, I'll send you invoices and then you just let me know if it's a twenty second or twenty third if we need to book that into Europe or you want us to do the open or the open job flight for you.
Customer: Yeah, I'll talk to my, well, first of all I needed, yes or no and again it's for the next couple of days this is all maybe while we look at our options.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yeah, do you wanna let me to see if I can get a hold, hold on one second. Let me see if he's on the phone.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): He's on a call. I'll send a message to him and then I will just reply back to you. Yes or no. I, again if he, you talked to him and he said, yes, then it's a, yes.
Customer: No, no, no, I never break that subject, I didn't discover the, I just thought, I just thought of the round trip and again I might Eno been talking to him on Saturday, I talked to somebody that was very respectful from you and they said, whatever Lauren says is this crew whatever Lauren says is rue, whatever Lauren says, hi tree you need to talk to Lauren. So, I doubt it, I doubt if it was your boss, it might have be the other one but I don't know, maybe it's just a really goods.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Oh, gotcha.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Might have been?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yeah, well Michael they both there's I well I don't work on I work yesterday for a coworker I don't work the weekend so I don't really know the staff but I'll double-check if most likely it was Michael he's our Goro but I'll just ask Michael my manager just to make sure that it's okay but again I don't see a problem with it but let me just get a confirmation from the big, the big man to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong.
Customer: That's cool and how confirm that is fine to leave early. I just have to let them know.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Exactly. Yup. They just need to know if you want to leave before lunch after lunch around what time that way they'll just, just note it which we got plenty of time to let them know.
Customer: That's great, yeah. Well, if we, if we got assuming we go on then twenty second, there's a 4:00 flight and 7:00 PM flight so we just have to decide what we wanna do.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): And the 4:00 flight most likely I mean you want to get there, they'll probably get you there what, three hours before so really if you do that it would be tight with the lunch. Well with.
Customer: Yeah, that would be tight, that would be tight with the lunch. Okay, so I think it's the seven, the 7:00 probably makes more sense.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Probably the 7:00, but also if you choose the 4:00 for some reason, if it's cheaper whatever. You don't have to take the excursion in the morning and Amsterdam you can chill or you can do your own thing until go back, eat lunch and then go to the airport. So you're not tied down to that tour.
Customer: Yup.
Customer: Right, and, yeah, yeah and the, and the other thing is they said that, oh, when I read the description it says, the option instead of doing that is, is they will take the second option that morning is to the right Susan or whatever the big museum and aster again. And then we could handle that on our own everyone even leave early leave a museum. So, but I think that we would probably do the seven but in any rate what else I can ask you, oh, and since you've been on a river cruise and I haven't how big a deal is that final thing you know, my wife is you know, we might make a lot of friends and we might really feel bad to miss the final dinner and I said, well.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Oh, nice.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yeah.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Right.
Customer: Is that a pretty big deal on the top river cruises? The final dinner or it is? What it is?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): No, it's just kinda like a send off. It's just like a dinner and then everybody kind of gets together and you kinda just mingle before you guys kind of go your own separate ways. I mean, it's not like, oh my god, you need to go that kind of thing. You may see other people leave as well the day before because they're doing other things like you are but it's not something that it's like, oh, my god! You don't wanna miss this kind of thing. It's just like a nice stuff but again people are going to be, people are going to be eating and they're gonna be going to bed because their flights are going to be early the next day kind of thing or at 3:00 AM, you never know. So no, it's not.
Customer: Mm-hmm.
Customer: Mm-hmm.
Customer: Yeah, I think we did it.
Customer: Exactly, right. Yeah, and, and as the three, yeah, three M. was not appealing and also if we landed, if we landed with south Hampton with all our lug to 7:30 in the morning, they're not gonna let us in, bark 11:00 at least. What are we gonna do it all that luggage in south Hanson from 7:30 in the morning, you know, if we flew in the same morning. So, that's why we're, that's why Wes the night before made a lot of sense and then I got a room for like almost nothing. The Maria point to the Maria so, yeah, I think that's what we're.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Oh.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Exactly.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Oh, nice and.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): And what we'll do and once you get we have your flight, your inbound the New York, Missouri, I will let know because you are staying at their hotel, it is the same category. It's through to is just we have the promotion with them. So you're not going to have to change rooms. We can always request early check-in with the hotel. Again it's just, it's a request depending on what time you guys arrive. But yeah, it's just, it's just convenient, so you'll still get the transfer from everything would still be included.
Customer: Mm-hmm.
Customer: Okay, we do lose the transfer with if we go the day before, right? When we, when we go, when we leave ansa do we, did you confirm whether we lose the transfer or not?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): What do you mean? No, you'll still get, I don't.
Customer: Wi.
Customer: They said that we would have to take a tax me probably but that was just the clerk that was the person at tax booked that they acted like they were a little unsure but they said that we would have to do our own arrangement if we leave the shipper a day early it's like we're leaving the ship like 87 hours Orly, really.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): I can verify, I can verify with Cal I mean, they are super, I mean, super accommodating even with people like, book pre hotels at a different hotel than uses for the start of a trip to still transfer them, as long as it's in the same facility. They may just have to set up a private transfer for you guys. I will call tal and verify that and let you know.
Customer: Okay, and the other but it that, that's not a deal breaker we can get a taxing ly. Yeah let's see more question. Oh, yeah, when I was reading this tap in the future does to give an extra room night in advance themselves if you're, if you're a past power cruiser or is that always an come in and day.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Mm-hmm.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Okay.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): So now, that you're gonna be not new to Ke anymore you will be able to, they have the, it's called the gift of time. So they offer everybody. It expires July 31st of this year for all land tours river cruises, small ship sailings for next year for 2025. So if you decide you'd like it so much, and you want to book another to trip, to get the extra free night, free night from to the gift of time, you would want to book another trip before July 31st.
Customer: Well, we're not gonna do that cause we want have been on Cal. We aren't going on Axt October. Are you talking back July thirty first 25 what wit which July 31st?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Well, no, no, no, no you have to book July 31st 24.
Customer: Yeah, yeah, but I'm not gonna do that for a free and.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Twenty fourth for 25 so essentially you're after the cut off, but going forward let's say in two years, okay, let's just make this up in two years you guys do another river cruise Orland tour. Then as long as they're still doing that's really the only promotion the gift of time for past guest you would be applicable as long as you book a before the deadline so.
Customer: No, that wouldn't work because, yeah, that wouldn't work.
Customer: Mm-hmm.
Customer: Right. And, and then a task providing and what is due to give additional value. Do they raise the very date or are you doing this is a one time for me this night before?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): So for new, for new tow guest we're able to provide the free night for new and then going forward you would be a past guest, it's either the gift card or the rebate then.
Customer: Okay.
Customer: Okay. So you would, so the rebate would have been higher if I had already created before. Well I'm getting two technic desert no matter, I'll figure out when the time comes but I'm just.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): No, if you're, if you're a pass if you're a past guest with to going forward let's say in a few years you book another trip then can offer you either the $300 gift card of your choice or we'll book your error for the rebate. That's it we're kinda tied down only for new guests. Are we able to provide the complimentary pre or post night only for new guest to out.
Customer: Okay, so. Okay so this if this were my second cruise with you and we weren't under the time and then it wasn't get the time then you wouldn't be able to give me the $622 value or whatever it is for the, I would only, I would quote only get the rebate which I'm not complaining is still very good but you, okay.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Mm-hmm.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Correct, correct. It's either the gift card or the rebate after your first time that's just make it simple, yup.
Customer: That's very helpful. Thanks for educating me. I'll look forward to hearing back the confirmation on the.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yup. Yes, yeah. Well how is one of like, it's not confusing but it's kind of one of the things where it's like it, it's not just like black or white you know we're just trying to give you as much back and a much better value as possible but yeah so we, so that's all set there, what was I gonna say to you?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): I will check with Michael about that. You keep me posted. What you wanna do. It's the twenty second twenty third what flights do you want Avis to book for you and we'll go ahead if it's business or whatever you want we'll book it for you and we'll send you that check for 1280 you'll get it before you guys go.
Customer: Okay, just like I want you do on my ocean crises, that's all good. Okay. And meanwhile I'm looking for, yeah, I meanwhile, I'm looking for it to the 25 nights you guys booked for me in July. I know an, we got a lot of good stuff coming out.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yup, but then two weeks, you guys going.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): I know you're going to have a good time there. I'm excited to hear, I have two of my coworkers they're on seaborne right now and they are up in sall fall, fall guard and the Artic right now for two weeks and they just did the pu, polar plunge today, I mean, the pictures just like stunning the feeds and stuff. So you are in for a treat but I definitely would like send me some pictures and let me know like, how everything is, as long as the internet's good.
Customer: No.
Customer: Mm-hmm.
Customer: My god.
Customer: Yeah, I think it will be cause they supposedly have the new starling on, on Marie. And now, yeah, in front of from what I read on marina, I'm very glad that I booked. This is our first ten hours. I'll be always done of see. And of course they change their plan when they marina three or four weeks ago and they didn't Remod they did not remodel the regular rooms. They only remodel the pen house. So, my pen house is got to be united Remod. I'm happy to hear that, right?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Is it, I think it's Starlink mm-hmm.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Mm-hmm.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Mm-hmm.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): I know.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Exactly, yeah, you guys are in for a treat one of like, the first ones to be in it, so yeah, enjoy that.
Customer: Yeah, we will. Alright, thanks so much Lauren, always fund to talk.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yeah, of, yeah, of course Ed, I will get back to you and you keep me posted then. And then we'll go by the end of the week. We'll get this all squared out squared away.
Customer: That's great. So, my next step is to hear back from you on whether you can do the round trick.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Yeah, open Jo. Yeah, I don't think it's gonna be a problem but let me just get a hundred percent confirmation from my boss. It's okay.
Customer: No, re.
Customer: Now do you guys have better pricing than others or, or you basically do just basically book the me there I can find on the Wever is it the parent?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): We sometimes do we send no, we sometimes do we sometimes get lower premium and business fairs.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): You know, if you have a certain schedule you'd like or something send it over, I'll send you the, our pricing it all depends just if it's like, you know, you want business class on all segments or you just want it over the water kind of thing. It's how we book it but no, we, we're very competitive and what you see online we can either match it or get it lower for you.
Customer: Oh, that would be good. Now, do I work with through you or do I work directly with the person on the phone in the air department?
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): I would book it for you. So, yeah, you would work with me and say, hey, these are some options. Let me know, like I said, we want premium economy, you know, or we want non-stop or this is the schedule we want, what's your price kind of thing? We that's what we do it all the time.
Customer: Okay.
Customer: That's great. Alright, thanks a lot.
Agent (Lauren Riesenberger): Alright sir, have a good one. We'll talk soon. Alright, bye-bye.
Customer: Bye.
