Full analysis
What happened
Debbie Contino called to book a Viking River cruise (July 28–August 4, 2026, Mediterranean itinerary) after receiving a promotional notice with a code offering cabin upgrades and travel credits. She confirmed interest in a Deluxe Veranda Two cabin at $2,790 per person (post-discount), and explored free economy air options with potential $150 AirPlus upgrade for flight customization. The agent clarified that free air may include connections and that nonstop availability and pricing are determined only after Viking concierge contact. Debbie accepted a 35 percent cancellation penalty given the late-booking stage, opted to add travel protection ($449/person pending review), and requested JFK as preferred departure airport. She asked the agent to create a hold good through end of business and said she would call back after consulting her husband and confirming pet care—expected before 6 PM ET.
Emotional read
The customer was engaged and methodical throughout, asking clarifying questions with patience despite some confusion about the promotional offer structure. She remained calm when drilling into technical details about flights and penalties, showing confidence in her own decision-making process. Her tone was cooperative and friendly, with occasional light humor (mentioning needing to check with the dog before her husband).
Emotional arc through the call
Remained steady and cooperative throughout; started curious and methodical, stayed engaged and collaborative, ended enthusiastic about next steps.

Agent (Fia Bauer): Thank you for calling travel, this is I. How may I assist you? Customer: Hi, Stea it's Debbie county and I've spoken with you before and we've used you for travel, I need to find out some information and possibly book something today. Do you have a few moments? Agent (Fia Bauer): Sure, what's going on? Customer: Okay, I received a notice from Viking that there was a cruise that's going out, there was a sale going on and the cruise going out. If I think that the iconic western median I think, room to Barna and they were offering certain dates free A. which I don't really know what that means and upgrading and, and, and that kind of stuff, category upgrading like, 250 travel credit on the, cool. I have the, I have the actual code. Agent (Fia Bauer): Okay, let's go. Customer: And I want to find out if the, do you want the code? Agent (Fia Bauer): 11 second. Let me get to the sailing first what is the date that you're interested in? Customer: Sure. Customer: I think it's the 28th of July until August 4th. Agent (Fia Bauer): Of 2026. Customer: Yes. Agent (Fia Bauer): Okay. Agent (Fia Bauer): And what is the code that you are looking at? Customer: Okay, it's A., as in apple, the number 4D as in David, 26. Agent (Fia Bauer): So you, I just wanna make sure I heard you correctly. You said A. As in-app. Alpha, D. As in delta 26. Customer: AA as in apple. The number 4D. As in David, 26. Oh, okay, hold on, let me go back in. Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. Agent (Fia Bauer): I've never heard of that code. Agent (Fia Bauer): It worked, I've just not heard of it. What type of category are you interested in? Customer: Let me see what is it? What is it? Let me see if I have this correct. I had it queued up on my phone. Let me get it again. Customer: June, July. Aust. Customer: The 18. Customer: Eighth July twenty eighth at the moment. Let's see. Customer: 12. Customer: Bus Toro. Okay. Uh-oh. Customer: Let's see what's available. Customer: I'm looking for the, I guess, the veranda V. one veranda and I think you can get, oh. Agent (Fia Bauer): So, they're all branding, they're all Brandom on liking. So, are you wanting a certain location in a certain size? Customer: I usually have a deluxe veranda when I've gone before. Agent (Fia Bauer): Okay, so we can, so I'm showing that we do have a DV two category that would be with your code $2,999 per person you would get a pass passenger discount of $100 and then tablet would reduce that further with $200. So it would be a total of $2,790.2699 per person in a DV two and then you do have free economy air if you so, choose to take it. Customer: Okay. Customer: Now, is that direct flight or it, or how does that work? Agent (Fia Bauer): So, if you wish to customize your flights, it would be in a Hu $150 per person charge for AirPlus. That does not necessarily mean that they will be able to put you on direct flights but it will be grant you the option to speak to a Viking representative and see what is available. They may have direct flights and they may cost more. So, let me see this itinerary around. Maybe there might be some non-stops from Miami. Customer: Okay. Customer: Oh, and, and that would be back and forth now. How about New York or New York? Agent (Fia Bauer): There's probably non-stops but again, just by selecting a specific airport does not guarantee that. The only thing that would guarantee that is by purchasing AirPlus and speaking directly with a biking com confirmation for Viking concierge, excuse me. Customer: Okay, so, I, so I get to a Vike copy as I get the applic and then we pick which airport we leave out of which. Agent (Fia Bauer): Well, you tell them where you're, they'll tell you what's available. So keep in mind it's free. Airfare so if that's one stop each way that's free. If you want non-stop they might say, well, we have it but it will cost you X. Amount of dollars more. Customer: Okay. Customer: Okay, so these at these prices, they're definitely stopping airfare. Okay you don't know that. Agent (Fia Bauer): I can't guarantee that I do not have access to what Viking contracts and it's not something that they would even tell me until this is paid in full. So if you are only interested in taking this trip with free nonstop air. Just keep in mind it may not be free once you make your request because what they have that prices within their contract may require a stop or two. I don't know, I don't have access but if you are wanting to take advantage of this free air then you just know that you will have to pay $150 per person fee. And. Customer: Okay. Customer: Okay. Customer: Uh-huh. Customer: Okay. Agent (Fia Bauer): And you will have to and, and when you speak to somebody aik they very well may say in order to get you the non-stop it may cost X. amount of dollars more. I do not know, I've seen it $50 more per person. I've seen it $3,000 more per person. So it can be all over the place. Customer: Okay. Customer: Okay. Customer: Yeah, okay, I understand and I, I'm flexible where I leave out of so, cause I'm in New York, New Jersey and in Florida so it would, it would work any, any place. Agent (Fia Bauer): If you're flexible then more than likely you would be able to get flights that will be suited to you. If you give them options. If you're flying out of either Florida, there are more options out of New York or New Jersey, there's no question about that. So if you are flexible, likely you will be able to get your choice flights with just $150 per person fee. Customer: Yup, mm-hmm yup. Customer: Okay, and, and at this late stage in the game when is final cancellation, say we get sick or something. What, when is that? Agent (Fia Bauer): So this is, you are already technically in penalty so if you decide to go with this particular trip then you would need to pay for it immediately. They're not going to give you that $72 hour comp complimentary hold any longer. It's going to be paid full immediately and then if you had to cancel next week you would already be in at least 35 percent penalty. Customer: Okay. Customer: Okay. Customer: That 35 penalty. Customer: Okay, so we get $35 penalty and if we pay by check it's still the three percent or whatever that was. Agent (Fia Bauer): Ty. No, it's now two percent. If you pay with, with E. check, it's a two percent discount. Customer: Two percent discount. Okay, can I run this by my husband and give you a call once he's out doing some errands, give you a call and. Agent (Fia Bauer): Sure, I can go ahead and yeah, absolutely that's perfectly fine. We can certainly just take a little bit of notes indicating what we spoke about then, then if this is something we want to proceed with, that's perfect. Customer: Cause that I. Customer: Okay. Customer: Yeah, I think it started out in what I say, started out and let's say and do they give us the, do they give us the guest upgrade also? That was part of that plan a room upgrade. Yes, I don't know. Agent (Fia Bauer): Parts to load. So this particular one. Agent (Fia Bauer): Yes, and no so the way that it works is that you would get the BV. Two for the same price as the entry level veranda. Customer: Oh, okay, which is the 29? Customer: 99, is that what that was? Agent (Fia Bauer): Yes, the $2,999 you're getting the DV two delux branded two for the same price as the veranda. So, that's what they mean by for. Customer: 26. Okay, and then what I, and the additional is taxes and everything else is not included. Agent (Fia Bauer): No taxes that are, that price of $2,999 is inclusive of taxes, fees, port charges, all that. Customer: Okay, so they're still tips and, and drink package. Okay, so tipping and drinks. Agent (Fia Bauer): Correct. Customer: And the drink packages. How much again? Agent (Fia Bauer): It's $27 per person per day. Customer: Okay, that's the alcohol package correct? Okay. So the $27 per day alcohol, okay. Let me put, put all my information and we'll start it started that way. Agent (Fia Bauer): Yes. Agent (Fia Bauer): Okay. Agent (Fia Bauer): And so, if you wish I can go ahead and create a hold, the hold we'll head we'll be good through the end of or to the end of business today but at least that would give you something to take a look at. Customer: Okay. Customer: Yes. Agent (Fia Bauer): Yeah, I can do that. Agent (Fia Bauer): And what else can I do for you? Customer: That's it for, for the moment I'm just gonna on it all pass my husband and see what he says cause they have to actually quote the dog fitter to see what she says. That's more important than asking my husband. Feel please gonna go along with it I just got to check now with the dog etcetera. Okay. I will call you back a little later. What time do you work until I, I'll call you up to the last minute. Agent (Fia Bauer): Okay. Agent (Fia Bauer): Well, yeah, that's important. Agent (Fia Bauer): I understand. Oh, I understand. Mm-hmm. Agent (Fia Bauer): I am here until you are on the east coast, correct? Then I'm here till 7:00 PM your time. Customer: Yes. Customer: Since, I'll probably call before that, I'll be out by 6:00, alright, so as soon as he gets back in for the day, I'll give you a callback and 11 more question if I tried to book tours and they're already booked. How do I get on the tours? Agent (Fia Bauer): Oh, even better. Agent (Fia Bauer): That sounds perfect. Agent (Fia Bauer): So, Viking doesn't have an actual formal wait list but if you book trips and, and they are already booked, just keep checking back because people do cancel, people change their mind and a lot of times if they're already sold out they'll realize that they are very popular and they will create more space or another departure. So just keep checking of the best way to do it. Customer: And it is, yeah. Yeah, that Tuesday. Okay. Okay, that's usually what they do and sometime in the morning although the night of when you're on the ship it usually works also. Okay, so let me call you back. Agent (Fia Bauer): Correct. Agent (Fia Bauer): That sounds great now as far as the error is concerned, is there a gateway that you would rather start with so we can at least do that? Customer: A gate. Well, yeah, probably New York or J. Of K. Agent (Fia Bauer): Okay, so we'll start with JFK if that's alright with you and then yeah, exactly. So we'll start with that and then if once we speak with Viking and it, you know, they don't have it, then we can say, alright, try new work, alright, try Miami and, and go from there one last question. Do you wish to have any type of travel protection? Customer: Yes, cause there's more mm-hmm. Customer: Okay, okay. Okay. Go ahead. Customer: How much is travel protection? Agent (Fia Bauer): I believe for something like this, it well, you know what, let me just make a couple of clicks and, and any pre or post that you would be interested in. Customer: Probably not, cause we're just squeezing this end but. Agent (Fia Bauer): Okay. Agent (Fia Bauer): Alright. Customer: Okay, so travel protection would be how much per person? Agent (Fia Bauer): That's what I'm looking for. Customer: And this is, what kind of protection cancellation policies, what is that? Agent (Fia Bauer): It's cancellation as well as medical, I believe it's $449 per person. So what I can do is just go ahead and say add it and then if you read it and it's not gonna work for you then we can remove it prior to the final so we can certainly at least give you everything to take a peek at. Customer: Well. Customer: Okay. Customer: Okay. Customer: Okay, great. Customer: Alright, and I will call you in a little bit. Agent (Fia Bauer): Alright, that sounds great. And I still have your email as D. alma 1018 at Gmail. Okay. I will send that once it's taken care of. Customer: Yes. Customer: Thank you so much. Talk to you soon. Bye-bye. Agent (Fia Bauer): My pleasure. We'll talk to you soon. Bye-bye.
