“I'm just wondering if we book something now for $2,025 and there's a price adjustment going forward, does Viking automatically adjust your cost?”
Next best action
After New Year (before January 15 wave season peak), proactively send Richard comparisons of the April 3 Viking sailing (with Pavlus voucher applied) vs. equivalent Avalon and AMA Waterways departures in same timeframe, broken down by total per-person cost and cabin categories he mentioned (veranda and French balcony). Set calendar reminder to contact him by January 10 before wave season pricing volatility intensifies.
Full analysis
What happened

Richard called to explore river cruises after an extended travel hiatus, specifically interested in a Holland-Belgium Viking River Cruise for April 3, 2025 with an advertised base price of $2,025. He raised substantive concerns about Viking's pricing inconsistency between brochures and online listings (2024 vs 2025 dates), and whether booking early locks him in or exposes him to cancellation penalties if better promotions emerge. Susan addressed his anxiety by checking live inventory, confirming the veranda cabin was sold out (only 4 of 55 remain) but 44 French balcony cabins were available at $6,199, then offered a $200 per-person Pavlus voucher discount plus onboard credit. Richard agreed to compare with other river lines (Avalon, AMA Waterways) and reconnect after the New Year during wave season to finalize a booking.

Emotional read

Richard started cautious and somewhat frustrated by pricing complexity and transparency issues with Viking's promotional structure, but warmed noticeably when Susan confirmed real-time cabin availability and mentioned Pavlus vouchers. He became more collaborative and decisive toward the end, moving from skeptical questioning to practical next-step planning. His tone shifted from analytical worry to friendly familiarity when referencing past Pavlus bookings.

Emotional arc through the call

Started analytical and somewhat anxious about pricing opacity and commitment risk, gradually warmed as Susan provided concrete inventory data and discounts, ending on a friendly, collaborative note with a clear next-step agreement.

How customer sees Pavlus
  • positive · acknowledged previous multiple bookings with Pavlus and still has branded luggage tags from past trips
  • positive · appreciated Susan's real-time cabin availability lookup and Pavlus vouchers that reduce pricing
  • positive · expressed comfort reconvening after holidays, implying trust in the ongoing relationship
Value perception

Richard implied Pavlus adds value through vouchers ($200 off per person), onboard credits, and real-time inventory access that enables informed cabin selection. He referenced a long history of bookings, suggesting loyalty, though he did not explicitly state whether Pavlus pricing beats booking direct with Viking.

Agent (Susan Bender): Hi, Richard it's Susan.
Customer: Hi Susan, how are you? It's been a while.
Agent (Susan Bender): I'm doing, doing pretty good. How are you?
Customer: Good, we haven't really traveled while so anyhow excuse me.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): It's been a while. Yes.
Customer: Yeah, I know. Well between COVID and everything else happens, life, things happened, anyhow we've been getting, you know, a million brochures and king and stuff and we was looking at one this Holland and strip for $2,025 though cause we can't tell the spring with a bunch of things we have to do. So I was wondering I'm, I looked up online and they had a couple of dates but, you know, all the brochures they have one pricing and then there's, if you look online and you put it in 2025 versus 2024. It's a whole different price structure.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah. Yup things happen.
Agent (Susan Bender): Uh-huh.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah.
Customer: So, and I understand that but I guess my question is if you would, if we were to book something for $2,025 and then there's a price adjustment you know going forward. Do, does, does, is king automatically adjust your cost, your pricing?
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Oh, oh, no, no, no. They do not, they, what they, what you have to do is cancel your current reservation and rebook it under the new promotion and it's right off the bat, you're $100 per person penalty to cancel plus if you purchased insurance that's nonrefundable so it can be pretty, it can be pretty muddy with with Viking as far as new promotions.
Customer: No, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Customer: Yeah.
Customer: Right.
Customer: See.
Customer: Most. Yeah, because it's the river bot that they fill up pretty fast. I went just say we, what do you suggest? I mean what are you telling other customers to, if you want to book a certain thing for $2,025 booking now, or you say you have some time to wait or I mean what, what's the general feeling? Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah, they do.
Agent (Susan Bender): Well, no one's really.
Agent (Susan Bender): No one that has really asked me about you know, should we wait if they want if they book it, I would suggest booking it earlier rather than later because as you might may know, biking ships fill up they are heavy marketers and they fill their ships.
Customer: Yeah, yeah.
Customer: Yeah.
Customer: Yeah I know. I know.
Customer: Yeah, no, I know that no, but I like for example, I was looking at the, so I had a April 3rd, 2025 for that, so, oh, okay.
Agent (Susan Bender): So don't wait too long. Let me, let me.
Agent (Susan Bender): Okay, let me look at it. Let me see how full it looks.
Customer: Chris.
Agent (Susan Bender): Okay, is it called Hallen. And Belgium or spring in Holland in Belgium, something like that. Okay.
Customer: Yeah, Allen and Belson right it goes how I Aman to answer up and then buy.
Agent (Susan Bender): And I'm sorry, what was the date in April?
Customer: Oh, I was looking at April 3rd 2020, right? So when you.
Agent (Susan Bender): Third of 2025. Okay. Okay.
Customer: They good categories online. So if you took the least expensive veranda $706,999 if you look on the book that we got just recently another one. But it's, I know it's a 2024 the veranda go, it starts at 3999 soon it's like a $3,000 difference now, I know it's because they want to fill up 2024, whatever spaces they had available so I thought that's a big, a big jump between you know $7 $7,000 and 4000 that's $6,000 between the two of us so I thought maybe was.
Agent (Susan Bender): Mm-hmm.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Exactly, exactly.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yup, I've been seeing big jumps and prices between $24 and 25 yup.
Customer: You are seeing a general that yeah, trying to make up, yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yes, in general.
Agent (Susan Bender): Okay.
Customer: Okay. So you know what? I, we may wait a little bit and then maybe after the new year, so I'll start coming out with new books and stuff, but I have one other question, is there another river about the cruise line that you have been working with like, and you would recommend, no, huh, yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Sure.
Agent (Susan Bender): Oh, we work with, we work with all of them. I would recommend either Avalon or alma AMA waterways, they're very good as well but they're kind of pricey but they do a fantastic job.
Customer: My you've seen yeah, okay.
Customer: Even. Okay. So, they're more expensive in general, than the, than the Viking. Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): In general. Yes, and they have.
Agent (Susan Bender): They'll have, if you go to their website, you'll see the cruise only price, cruise with land price there. Some of their extensions are long, much longer than biking, sy, are usually two to three nights before or after? And a lot of the, the, lot of the alma waterways extensions can be up to seven nights extra, so, but Avalon is good. Avalon part of globus the globes family of brands, they're very good, they're moderately priced have a good reputation and I haven't heard any negative reviews, so, my, my people that have taken them.
Customer: Mm-hmm.
Customer: Oh.
Customer: Two days, three days.
Customer: Yeah.
Customer: Okay, yeah, anyway.
Customer: Okay.
Customer: I'm good. Yeah, yeah, okay. Well I'm gonna look you know we'll check because like we said, like you said, that they're very heavy into walk and I mean they, I get more from them than I did when I used to get the newspaper everyday, you know. But yeah, so I'll, yeah, so I'm gonna look.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah, I bet. I believe it. So, tell me what category you were interested in and I'll see how full it looks okay.
Customer: We were looking at the veranda. I mean in, in reality, we can even take a, the French procket me. Because the or the veranda one of the least expensive state room was B. cat which was $7,000 on, on when I looked on online here.
Agent (Susan Bender): French balcony?
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah, yup.
Customer: But you know because, because you're riding you the river there, area. You got the rooftop area, you're not spending a lot of time sitting in the cabin with the you know the doors open and sitting on the Rando there. Most of your time you're a, your room except to sleep, and so it doesn't, it doesn't matter even though it is night some time to time to have it. So, but I, that's our a preferences to do the veranda statement, one of the you know check up but.
Agent (Susan Bender): Mm-hmm.
Agent (Susan Bender): Well Randa be it says it's full, it's sold out. That category is sold out. Let me try French Alcon, let's try French balcony. Any how many they have available? Yes, that's for $2,025.
Customer: Alright.
Customer: That's a $20 25, yeah, 2024.
Agent (Susan Bender): That's why I say don't wait too long. They will fill up they always do. Okay let's see. It says French bal, these French balconies are in the af section of the ship upper deck.
Customer: Yeah.
Customer: Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Let's see how many cabins are available. Just waiting.
Customer: What to be cost?
Agent (Susan Bender): Looks like they have 44 cabins available in the French balcony. C. those are on, those are on the upper deck. And actually, they only off, they only have 55 veranda cabins period. One of them is booked. They still have four available.
Customer: Right.
Customer: And that's $6,200 at this point. No, yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yes, $626,199 now Pavlis has vouchers. We have some vouchers at the moment that will take $200 off of the price per person.
Customer: Bye. That's good.
Agent (Susan Bender): So, that will take the price down a little bit and every little bit helps and then we also give you an onboard credit as you probably know cause I think you've booked with us in the past.
Customer: Just yeah.
Customer: Yup. Oh, yes, more than one, a lot of times I still have my those little tags for the luggage. I get so many of them.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah, yeah.
Customer: Yeah, alright, well what we'll do is I'm gonna take, we're gonna look about look at it and I'll look at the other one. Anyhow just as a comparison what the trip is like and then we'll give you a callback but we wanted to touch base with you and say hello and.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): Oh, thank you. I appreciate that. Happy holidays to you and yours. They I'm going to be off next week, but then I'll be back after that. Okay.
Customer: Thank you, thank you too. You take it from time off now or.
Customer: Okay, okay. So after the new years would be a good time for us to touch base with you again if to be do some research on some of the other. That's the watch season. What?
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah, yeah, that's wave season. That's what we call wave season the first of the year. Very, very busy time. Yeah, it's a very busy time. So.
Customer: We should do time goes away next.
Agent (Susan Bender): So we get, you know, no, I didn't.
Customer: I don't know if you heard maybe, maybe before you go in next week.
Agent (Susan Bender): I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you.
Customer: What did you say I maybe before you go away next week. Alright, so, we'll take a look and we'll take some looks, we can always, you'll be here next two days so we can oh, yeah, okay, okay.
Agent (Susan Bender): Yeah.
Agent (Susan Bender): I will I'll be here the rest of I'll be here through Friday and then I'll be out until until the following Friday the twenty ninth I'll actually be back on the twenty ninth, okay? Alright, my pleasure. Thank you so much and you take care as well. Merry Christmas. Take care. Bye-bye.
Customer: Yeah, yeah, the following week.
